Hummingbirds Bird Identification   1  2  3

The Buff-bellied Hummingbird's nest (like other hummers') is typically made of fine bark fibers, bits of leaves, moss and the like, and its outer walls adorned with lichen flakes. It is lined with soft plant down, and the whole is bound together (and to the branch) with spider silk. Hummers normally lay two white, unmarked eggs, notably elongated in shape. Though the eggs are the smallest in the bird world, they are quite large in relation to the size of the layers.

The Calliope Hummingbird is the smallest bird in North America and breeds near mountain meadows in the West.

Costa's Hummingbird is common in our Southwestern deserts. Male hummingbirds perform elaborate courtship displays. The aerial maneuver is typically accompanied by twitters, squeaks, hisses or other hummingbird "songs". Another part of the ritual is the display of the male's brilliant head plumage.

The Lucifer Hummingbird is unique among North American hummers in having a distinctly decurved bill. It lives mainly on the arid Mexican plateau but is seen in west Texas when the Agave blooms.
