Hummingbirds Bird Identification   1  2  3

The Ruby-throated is the only hummingbird species that occurs regularly east of the Mississippi. Pollen from the fall-flowering jewelweed often gives autumn Ruby-throats a pale forehead.

The aggressive little Rufous Hummingbird nests as far north as southeastern Alaska and thus reaches a higher latitude than any other hummingbird species. It is an abundant migrant throughout most of the West.

Southeastern Arizona is the hummingbird capital of North America. Fourteen species have been recorded there, and it is not unusual for feeders in the mountains to attract 5 or 6 species at a time. The Magnificent (upper left) and the Blue-throated (right) are our two largest hummers. The dark Broad-billed (lower left) is generally a bird of dry foothills and canyons.
